Alaska Now: Troopers Respond, Streets Stay Busy, Communities Celebrate 🎉

Good morning Alaska! Law enforcement keeps communities on alert and streets busy this weekend. From domestic disputes to stabbings and traffic incidents, our first responders handle it all while local events bring people together.

🚨 In Wasilla, troopers respond to a domestic dispute Friday evening around 7:20 PM on West Horizon Drive. They say 46-year-old Hawley Crawford points a handgun at a former household member and damages his own vehicle, causing about $2,500 in damage. Troopers arrest Crawford and take him to Mat-Su Pretrial, charging him with third-degree domestic violence assault and third-degree criminal mischief.


🚨 In Palmer, Alaska State Troopers say 48-year-old Cory Thingstad assaulted a household member and damaged shared property. Troopers arrested Thingstad and remanded him to Mat-Su Pretrial for fourth-degree domestic violence assault and fifth-degree criminal mischief.


🚌 In Glennallen, troopers respond to a school bus stuck in a ditch around 6:30 AM on the Richardson Highway near mile 112. The driver was uninjured. Troopers and VPSOs controlled traffic until they removed the bus safely from the roadway.

Anchorage police say they responded to a stabbing at the Residence Inn Marriott on 35th Avenue Friday afternoon around 3:15 PM. According to police, officers found a man and woman with stab wounds to their upper bodies. Both went to local hospitals with life-threatening injuries. Police continue investigating the motive and the relationship between the parties.


📝 A couple of quick community notes: APD’s front counter at 716 W 4th Avenue closes Monday, January 19, for Martin Luther King Jr. Day and reopens Tuesday at 8:00 AM. 

Perkup Espresso closes early today for its annual company party. Valley locations close at 4 PM, and the Anchorage café closes at 3 PM. The team thanks customers for their understanding as they take a little time to celebrate the New Year together.


Looking ahead, Anchorage celebrates Indigenous student creativity with the “Walking With Our Ancestors” event at Bettye Davis East High School, 4025 E Northern Lights Blvd, on January 31. The event runs 10:30 AM to 3:00 PM and features a stunning student fashion show from 11:30 AM to 1:30 PM, live Indigenous dance performances, and a vibrant selection of local artisan and craft vendors. The public is welcome, and vendors still have time to apply here.
