Memaw’s Arctic Roll: The Mat-Su Steering Wheel Test

By Gina Hill | Alaska Headline Living | March 24, 2026

Southcentral Alaska Winter Commute • Tuesday, March 24, 2026

💅 Alright sugar, today’s commute comes with a free steering-wheel workout courtesy of Mother Nature. The National Weather Service has issued a Wind Advisory for the Lower Matanuska Valley, and that means the Wasilla, Knik Goose Bay, and Parks Highway crowd may be doing a little lane-negotiating with northeast winds later today. Starting around 1:00 PM and lasting into Wednesday afternoon, winds will crank up to 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 55 mph.

Now honey, that kind of gust will push your pickup sideways and try to redecorate your yard with the neighbor’s trampoline. 🛻💨

The Mat-Su Valley acts like a wind funnel, so Wasilla and the Parks corridor will feel the strongest bursts, especially tonight. Palmer will still get gusty, but the big shove aims west across the valley.

🔴 Daily Verdict: Wind vs. Commuters
Roads: Mostly plowed with scattered icy patches
Traffic: Normal flow, but gusts may push vehicles around open stretches
Sky: Clouds may break tonight. A faint aurora could sneak through

Memaw’s Parting Words 💅

💖 Now listen here, honey. If you’re rolling through Wasilla, Knik, or the Parks corridor this afternoon, expect a few moments where the road says, “You sure about that lane?” Slow it down, keep both hands on the wheel, and give the big trucks some elbow room. Wind loves a tall vehicle.

And tonight, if the gusts sweep the clouds out of the valley, step outside for a minute. Alaska sometimes hides a little northern lights surprise. 🌌

Sing along, warm your hands, and let Memaw guide you through today’s wintery commute. 🎵💅❄️
