🚗💨 💅 Who Ordered This Weather Cocktail? Fog, Snow & 45-MPH Gusts!

Memaw’s Arctic Roll for Wednesday, October 21, 2026

Wednesday has a little of everything, Alaska: snowflakes, freezing fog, temperatures hovering around the freezing mark, and a wind that could make the Seward Highway a handful. 💅🌨️ And tonight? The northern lights may be worth watching if the clouds cooperate.

But first, a little love for the people who keep us healthy. It’s Medical Assistants Recognition Day, and Memaw is sending a special shout-out to her son Randy at Alaska Heart & Vascular Institute in Anchorage. ❤️ More on that below, because today’s healthcare heroes deserve a little recognition, too!

🟢🟡🔴 Daily Verdict: Freezing Fog First, Windy Roads Next, Aurora Maybe!

  • Roads: Treat wet pavement, freezing fog and possible light snow as hazards during the morning commute. Check Alaska 511 before departure.
  • Traffic: Roadwork remains a concern on the Seward and Sterling highways. The live 511 map did not provide enough readable incident detail to confirm that no other alerts are active. Alaska 511
  • Sky: Low aurora activity is forecast by UAF. Clouds may spoil the show in parts of Southcentral Alaska.
  • Headlights: Use your headlights in fog and reduced visibility, but keep the high beams off. Bright lights reflect off fog and make it harder to see. Slow down, leave extra following distance, and watch for icy patches.

⚠️ Mat-Su Watch

No current, independently confirmed major off-corridor closure was established in the available information this morning. Check Alaska 511 for current closures before heading toward Hatcher Pass or other mountain roads.

⚠️ Southcentral Watch (Anchorage Bowl & Hillside)

Seward Highway: Strong Winds and Gusts

  • Status: Windy driving conditions are forecast.
  • When: Wednesday, October 21, especially this afternoon and tonight.
  • Where it hits: Seward and the surrounding highway corridor; check conditions before traveling north toward Anchorage.
  • Why: The Seward forecast calls for north winds of 20–25 mph, gusting as high as 40 mph today, increasing to gusts as high as 45 mph tonight.

💅 Reality check: Keep both hands on the wheel, expect sudden crosswinds and give high-profile vehicles extra room. The strongest gusts can make driving difficult.

🌅 Sunrise & Sunset: Wasilla, 8:57 a.m. – 6:25 p.m.

Anchorage is reporting 33°F with light drizzle and fog. The forecast calls for snow likely before 10 a.m. and patchy freezing fog. Don’t let temperatures near freezing fool you into assuming the road is safe.

🌅 Sunrise & Sunset: Anchorage, 8:58 a.m. – 6:28 p.m.

🌌 Aurora forecast: Kp 2 during the evening forecast period. Low activity; cloud cover may limit viewing.

🚜✨ Seward Highway

Seward Highway MP 120 – Huffman Road | Alaska 511

Representative forecast: Seward and the southern Seward Highway corridor.

Seward is reporting 37°F and fair conditions, but the wind is the bigger concern today. The forecast calls for north winds of 20–25 mph, with gusts up to 40 mph. Tonight, gusts could reach 45 mph.

  • Location: Seward Highway MP 90–99.
  • Work: Flagging, pilot cars, delays and nightly lane closures throughout the work zone.
  • Speed limit: Reduced to 55 mph.
  • Additional work: Crews are repairing and repaving the adjacent shared-use pathway. A shuttle is to be provided when the pathway is unsafe to use during construction.
  • Last listed update: October 2, 2026, at 4:27 p.m.

💅 Reality check: Allow extra time, obey flaggers and watch for construction workers and equipment.

🌌 Aurora forecast: Low activity, with Kp 2 during the evening period. Seward’s partly cloudy forecast may offer viewing opportunities if the sky clears.

Representative forecast: Kenai and the Sterling Highway corridor.

Kenai is starting at 32°F under mostly cloudy skies. The forecast calls for patchy freezing fog before 10 a.m., followed by gradual clearing and a high near 37°F. Tonight is forecast to be mostly clear, with a low around 18°F.

🌅 Sunrise & Sunset: Kenai, 9:01 a.m. – 6:36 p.m.

🚧 Roadwork / Maintenance: Mileposts 45–47

The supplied Alaska 511 listing describes Stage 3/1B construction along the Sterling Highway, with QAP as contractor.

  • Location: Crews and equipment between MP 45 and 47, within the MP 45–60 project corridor.
  • Work schedule: Blasting Monday through Friday; construction Monday through Saturday, 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.
  • Traffic control: Flaggers and pilot cars, with delays of approximately 10 minutes.
  • Trails: The listing says trails within the corridor are open.
  • Last listed update: October 5, 2026, at 12:55 p.m.

Important date check: The same listing mentions a scheduled closure on October 7–8, which has already passed. Do not treat that old closure window as active today. Verify current conditions and any revised schedule through Alaska 511.

💅  Reality check: Slow down for flaggers, watch for blasting and equipment entering the roadway, and budget extra travel time.

🌌 Aurora forecast: Kp 2 during the evening period. Kenai’s mostly clear forecast gives sky watchers a better opportunity if the forecast holds.

🚗✨ Knik Goose Bay Road

KGB & S Clapp – W Fairview Loop | Alaska 511

Representative forecast: Knik-Goose Bay Road and the Wasilla area.

This corridor shares the Wasilla forecast: 32°F with light snow and fog, a high near 34°F, and a low around 19°F tonight. The morning commute deserves particular attention because freezing fog can make an ordinary-looking road unexpectedly slippery.

🌅 Sunrise & Sunset: Wasilla area, 8:57 a.m. – 6:25 p.m.

🌌 Aurora forecast: Kp 2 during the evening period. Low activity, with partly cloudy skies forecast.

🌌 Tonight’s Northern Lights Forecast

Low activity expected

Kp 2

UAF’s supplied forecast calls for low aurora activity tonight. Its hourly outlook reaches Kp 4 at 4 p.m., then falls to Kp 2 at 7 p.m. and remains at Kp 2 for the 10 p.m.–1 a.m. period.

Source: UAF Geophysical Institute Aurora Forecast. NOAA’s current three-day outlook also anticipates geomagnetic activity reaching Kp 4.67 during October 21–23.

What does that mean for Southcentral?

  • Wasilla and Anchorage: Partly cloudy tonight, so viewing may be hit-or-miss.
  • Kenai and Homer: Mostly clear skies are forecast, giving observers a better chance if conditions hold.
  • Seward: Partly cloudy skies may allow occasional viewing.

The UAF forecast says low-level displays may be visible overhead from Utqiaġvik to Fairbanks and low on the northern horizon as far south as Anchorage and Juneau, provided skies are clear. Don’t plan your evening around a guaranteed show.

❤️ Medical Assistants Recognition Day: A Shout-Out from Memaw

Wednesday, October 21, is Medical Assistants Recognition Day, and Memaw has a special reason to celebrate.

A big shout-out to my son, Randy, at Alaska Heart & Vascular Institute in Anchorage! ❤️

❤️ Want to thank a medical assistant who made a difference? Tell them personally, write a heartfelt thank-you note, or mention them by name in a positive review of their clinic. A few sincere words can mean more than you know. Memaw is sending extra love to her son Randy at Alaska Heart & Vascular Institute in Anchorage, and a big THANK YOU to medical assistants everywhere for the compassion, professionalism, and care they bring to their work.

Medical assistants help connect patients with their healthcare providers. They may take vital signs, prepare patients for examinations, assist with procedures, maintain records and keep busy clinics running smoothly. Their work combines practical skills with patience and compassion, often at moments when patients need both.

The American Association of Medical Assistants established Medical Assistants Recognition Week to recognize these essential healthcare professionals.

To all the medical assistants across Alaska: thank you for the work you do, the patients you help and the care you bring to each day. And Randy, your mom is giving you an extra-big shout-out today! 💖

If a medical assistant has made a difference in your care, today is a good day to tell them.

💅 Memaw’s Parting Words

Alaska, the morning may be foggy, the roads may be slick, and the wind may have a few opinions of its own. Don’t let a familiar route convince you that today’s drive is business as usual.

Check 511 before you roll, give yourself time to get there, and remember that slowing down is smarter than arriving in a hurry. Then, when evening comes, take a peek at the northern sky if the clouds give you a break.

And to all the medical assistants keeping our clinics moving, especially my Randy: thank you for showing up and making a difference. ❤️

Drive smart, look out for each other, and keep those headlights shining, Alaska! 🚗💨

Forecasts from NOAA, the National Weather Service, and Alaska 511. Reality checks from Memaw. Both are subject to change without notice.
