💅🌦️ Mother Nature Brought Showers. DOT Brought Cones.

Memaw’s Arctic Roll for Thursday, August 13, 2026

☕️ Good morning, buttercups! The coffee is hot, the roads are wet, and Mother Nature apparently decided everybody needed a little windshield drama before breakfast. Anchorage is waking up mostly cloudy at 57°F, Wasilla is getting light rain at 56°F, and Kenai is dealing with light rain and fog/mist with visibility down to 5 miles.

Today’s commute is less “white-knuckle adventure” and more “wipers on, eyes up, and give those work zones the extra time they deserve.” 💅

🟢🟡🔴 Daily Verdict: Mostly Manageable, But Wet Windshields and Work Zones Want Your Attention

Roads: Wet conditions and scattered showers across Southcentral, with active construction on the Glenn, Seward and Sterling highways.
Traffic: Live 511 incident status could not be independently verified because the incident layer was inaccessible.
Sky: Mostly cloudy tonight across Anchorage, Mat-Su and Kenai, which is not exactly an aurora hunter’s dream. NOAA’s accessible 27-day outlook lists a maximum Kp of 2 for August 13.

⚠️ Southcentral Watch (Anchorage Bowl & Hillside)

Wet morning roads and reduced visibility in parts of the Kenai corridor

  • Status: Wet roads, rain and localized visibility concerns
  • When: Morning commute, especially south of Anchorage
  • Where it hits: Kenai and Seward Highway corridors
  • Why: Rain is likely through the morning, with Kenai reporting light rain and fog/mist and 5-mile visibility at 4:53 AM. Seward is also reporting light rain.
  • 💅 Reality check: Wet pavement is not a race track. Leave extra stopping room and turn those headlights on.

🚧 Roadwork / Maintenance

GLENN HIGHWAY BRIDGE DECK PRESERVATION

Northbound bridge is open to traffic. Expect intermittent southbound lane closures:

  • Monday through Friday: 11 AM to 4:30 AM
  • Friday 11 AM through Sunday 4:30 AM
  • 45 MPH speed reduction is in effect
  • Contractor: Hamilton Construction
  • Agency: DOT&PF
  • More information: www.glennbridges.com

Memaw’s reality check: Northbound is open, but southbound is still playing musical lanes. Slow down, watch the signs and do not wait until the last second to merge.

🛻💨 Seward Highway

Morning6651Rain likely. Wet pavement and reduced visibility deserve extra following distance.🟡 Moderate
Afternoon6651Rain may continue into the afternoon. Watch for spray and construction activity.🟡 Moderate
Evening6652Mostly cloudy with rain easing. Construction zones remain the big issue.🟡 Moderate

Kenai’s official NWS forecast calls for showers before 7 AM, then rain likely mainly between 7 AM and 1 PM, with a high near 66°F. Seward’s supplied NWS forecast calls for rain likely before 10 AM, a high near 66°F, south winds 10 to 15 mph and gusts as high as 20 mph.

🚧 Roadwork / Maintenance

SEWARD HWY @ McHUGH CREEK

  • Location: MP 111.5 to 112
  • Watch for crews along the roadway
  • Nightly pilot cars from 8 PM to 5 AM
  • Speed limit reduced to 45 MPH from MP 111 to 112
  • Contractor: Granite Construction
  • Agency: DOT&PF

SEWARD HWY MP 90-99

Construction began August 2.

  • Expect delays
  • Nightly lane closures
  • Flagging operations and/or pilot cars
  • Construction equipment and personnel near the shared-use pathway
  • Contractor: Granite Construction Company
  • Agency: DOT&PF

SEWARD HWY MP 75-69

Road maintenance is active through October 2.

  • Short delays
  • Flagging and lane-closure operations
  • Monday through Friday, 6:30 AM to 6 PM
  • Both directions affected

Memaw’s reality check: Three work zones means this is not the morning to “make up time” with your accelerator. Build the delay into the trip before the road builds it for you.

🚚💨 Sterling Highway

Sterling Highway @ Tern Lake MP 37 | Alaska 511
Time of DayHi Temperatures (°F)Lo TemperaturesDriving TipsRoad Risk Level
Morning6651Rain likely around the Kenai Peninsula. Keep headlights on and watch spray from traffic.🟡 Moderate

Kenai’s NWS forecast puts Thursday’s high at 66°F with an 80% chance of precipitation. Thursday night is forecast to be mostly cloudy with a low around 52°F.

🚧 Roadwork / Maintenance

STERLING HIGHWAY MP 45-47

  • Blasting operations Monday through Friday
  • Construction crews Monday through Saturday, 6 AM to 7 PM
  • Flagging during blasting operations
  • Expect 5 to 10 minute delays
  • Watch for equipment entering and exiting the roadway
  • Trails within the corridor are open
  • Contractor: QAP
  • Agency: DOT&PF

Memaw’s reality check: Five minutes is five minutes. Do not turn it into fifteen because you tried to beat the flagger.
