Anchorage Police Department traffic units are advising motorists to use caution on the Seward Highway today as wintery mix conditions are affecting portions of the route. Meteorologists are reporting precipitation that includes snow, freezing rain, and sleet along the corridor from Anchorage south through the Turnagain Pass area toward Girdwood and Summit Lake.

These conditions are creating slick spots and reduced traction on pavement, particularly at higher elevations through Turnagain Pass near milepost 70 along the Seward Highway. Snow accumulation and icy sections are possible where temperatures hover around freezing. Drivers should expect challenging travel conditions with slick road surfaces and lower visibility in places. For the most current traffic and road condition information, check Alaska 511 before you travel and plan extra time if you must be on the road.

Stay alert for changing conditions and allow for additional stopping distance. Road crews are active but the mix of precipitation makes winter driving hazardous today.
