Mayor to Appoint New Member to Serve Until October 2026 Election

PALMER, Alaska (Oct. 17, 2025) – The City of Palmer is accepting applications to fill a vacant seat on the Palmer City Council. Mayor Jim Cooper will appoint a qualified resident to serve on the council until the city’s next regular election, scheduled for October 6, 2026.

City officials are encouraging engaged community members to step forward and take part in shaping local policy. The position offers a chance to serve on a “dynamic decision-making team governing your community,” according to the city’s announcement.

How to Apply

Applications can be downloaded from the city’s website at palmerak.org or picked up in person at Palmer City Hall. Completed applications must be received by the City Clerk’s Office no later than 5 p.m. on Friday, October 31, 2025.

Eligibility Requirements

To qualify for appointment, candidates must:

• Be a registered voter in the State of Alaska.
• Have resided within Palmer city limits for at least one year prior to filing.

Council Responsibilities

Palmer City Council members play a key role in local governance, including:

• Attending two regular council meetings each month, plus special sessions as needed.
• Setting city policy and approving the annual budget.
• Participating in intergovernmental relations and public committees.
• Applying principles of land use planning, finance, due process, and contracting laws.

The city’s general boundaries include Cedar Hills Subdivision to the north, the river to the east, Hemmer Road to the west, Helen Drive to the southwest, and Springer Loop to the south.

The selected applicant will serve from the time of appointment until a new council member is elected in 2026.
