High winds with hurricane‑force gusts continue to sweep through the Matanuska‑Susitna Borough, knocking out power, damaging homes, vehicles, and infrastructure, and prompting a formal disaster declaration along with state assistance programs for affected residents.

High winds continue to batter the Matanuska-Susitna Borough this morning. Northeast gusts through the Mat-Su Valley are reaching 35 to 84 mph, and a high wind warning remains in effect through at least 9 p.m. Winds are expected to remain above 60 mph throughout the morning and slow only late in the day. Blowing and drifting snow is possible, though snow cover is currently insufficient to significantly reduce visibility. Residents are urged to exercise caution and secure property as the storm continues.

Amid ongoing storm conditions, the Alaska Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management (DHS&EM) is accepting applications for state Individual Assistance and Temporary Housing programs for residents affected by the December 2025 Mat-Su Wind Storm. The registration period runs through February 20, 2026.
The programs provide financial aid for disaster-related damages not covered by insurance, including repairs to primary residences, essential personal property, transportation, and medical or funeral expenses. Temporary Housing Grants are also available for those whose homes are uninhabitable.
Applicants should gather proof of residence, insurance documents, property ownership records, and photos of damages. Registration is available online at ready.alaska.gov or by calling 1-844-445-7131. Additional guidance is available at Disaster Assistance Centers if activated.
Residents are encouraged to apply as soon as possible to ensure eligibility, and all assistance from other sources must be disclosed to prevent duplication of benefits.
