The National Weather Service issues a High Wind Warning for the Lower and Upper Matanuska Valley from Sunday at noon through Monday at noon. Dangerous northeast winds threaten travel, outdoor activity, and the power grid, including power lines, utility poles, substations, and the equipment that delivers electricity to homes and businesses.
Current Power Outages

According to the Matanuska Electric Association outage map, most areas have restored power following earlier wind-related disruptions. Currently, 9 members remain without power in the Knik Goose Bay area. (View the map)
What to Expect: Wind and Cold
The most hazardous period occurs Sunday through early Monday as northeast winds strengthen, bringing gusts that can topple tree limbs, cause blowing and drifting snow, and stress power lines and utility equipment. After the peak winds, very cold air remains in place through midweek, creating dangerous wind chills even when winds ease.
| Time | Wind | Temperature |
|---|---|---|
| Sunday | Northeast winds around 35 mph, gusts up to 50 mph | High near 17°F |
| Sunday Night | Winds remain strong | Low near 4°F |
| Monday | Winds gradually ease but remain gusty | High near 13°F |
| Monday Night | Lighter winds | Low near 0°F or below |
| Tuesday | Light north to northeast winds | High near 9–11°F |
Even after winds weaken, wind chill values remain dangerous, especially during the coldest morning hours. Residents should remain alert for winter hazards through midweek, including icy roads and extreme cold.
Safety and Preparedness Tips
