Traffic cameras from the Alaska Department of Transportation & Public Facilities show conditions Thursday morning along the Seward Highway at Bird Point, Portage, Turnagain Pass and Summit Lake as a Winter Weather Advisory takes effect for parts of the corridor.
ANCHORAGE, Alaska – The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for parts of Southcentral Alaska, warning that heavy snowfall could make travel difficult along the Seward Highway later today.

The advisory covers Girdwood, Portage and Turnagain Pass, areas along the eastern side of Turnagain Arm known for rapidly changing winter conditions.
Forecasters say the advisory will be in effect from 10 a.m. Thursday until 4 a.m. Friday.
Snow is expected to increase through the day, with total accumulations of 6 to 12 inches likely. Localized areas could see as much as 18 inches, particularly at higher elevations. Heavier bands may produce snowfall rates of around one inch per hour.

The powdery nature of the snow may also lead to reduced visibility, as vehicles can easily kick it up along the highway.
Officials with the Anchorage Office of Emergency Management are urging drivers to slow down and allow extra time when traveling through the corridor, particularly during the Thursday evening commute.
Motorists can check current road conditions through the Alaska Department of Transportation & Public Facilities 511 system before heading out.
