Anchorage School District (ASD) has announced that all schools and support facilities are closed today due to hazardous weather and icy road conditions. The closure applies district-wide; only emergency staff (including maintenance and facility personnel) should report for duty. Facebook+1
At the same time, the National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Freezing Rain/Winter Weather Advisory for the Anchorage and Mat-Su areas, active through 6pm, warning that “freezing rain and light snow are likely … and roads may become slick and hazardous,” especially on side streets, overpasses, and in upper-elevation areas. What this means right now:
- Travel is strongly discouraged. Road and bridge surfaces may be dangerously icy, especially in neighborhoods, on side streets, and in higher-altitude zones.
- Unless otherwise announced, ASD plans to resume normal school operations tomorrow. After-school activities and community-facility rentals remain pending; a final decision will be released by noon today. Facebook+1
Stay safe, avoid unnecessary travel, and keep an eye out for the noon update from ASD.
