🚗💨 Memaw’s Arctic Roll: Friday’s Forecast, a Sports-Day Shoutout & a Peek at the Northern Lights

Memaw’s Arctic Roll for Friday, October 16, 2026

Good morning, Alaska! đŸ’… Memaw’s got a little sunshine in the forecast, some construction zones that deserve your attention, and a northern lights forecast that says the sky might have a quiet surprise up its sleeve. But before you grab that travel mug and head for the highway, remember: October mornings can be chilly even when the afternoon looks downright friendly.

Wendler Middle School wrestler Zachary Thompson squares off against an opponent from the Coyotes of Mirror Lake Middle School during a competitive match, ready to put his training and strategy into action.

Today also brings us National Sports Day, so we’re giving a special shoutout to my grandson Zachary, who’s putting in the work on the wrestling mat. Wrestling may not get all the flashy headlines, but it has a history stretching back thousands of years. Now, let’s get those wheels rolling safely!

🟢🟡🔴 Daily Verdict: Sunshine, Roadwork & a Quiet Aurora Watch

  • Roads: Alaska 511 live incident details could not be independently confirmed in this check. Known Seward Highway and Sterling Highway construction remains important for planning.
  • Traffic: Allow extra time for flagging, pilot cars and work-zone delays on the affected highways.
  • Sky: Mostly sunny across much of Southcentral Alaska today, but clouds are expected to increase in some areas tonight. UAF forecasts low aurora activity, with a Kp of 1 to 2 during the evening and overnight periods.

Forecast snapshot: Anchorage is forecast to reach 46°F today, with a low of 36°F tonight. The NWS hourly graph reaches 47°F, so hourly values and the official point forecast differ by one degree. Wasilla is forecast to reach 45°F, while Kenai is forecast to reach 46°F.

🌤️ Today’s Weather at a Glance

Current observations supplied from the NWS pages, updated around 5:53–5:56 a.m. AKDT. Conditions will vary along each highway.

🌄 Daylight Is Getting Shorter

💡 Memaw’s Headlight Reminder: Alaska’s daylight is shrinking, and those phantom cars are out there! Turn on your headlights so other drivers can see you, even during daylight hours when visibility is poor. If you can’t see clearly, neither can the driver coming toward you. See and be seen, Alaska! 🚗💨

🚗🌫️ PHANTOM CARS ON THE GLENN HIGHWAY! When gray skies and gloomy weather roll in, vehicles without headlights can nearly disappear into the background. Don’t make other drivers guess where you are. Turn on your headlights. See and be seen, Alaska! 💡

🌌 Aurora Forecast for Tonight

Aurora borealis lights up the night sky over Knik in 2025. Courtesy: Alaska Headline Living ©️

UAF Geophysical Institute forecast for Friday, October 16:

Kp 1–2

The UAF forecast calls for low aurora activity this evening and overnight. The live Geophysical Institute page also lists a daily forecast Kp of 2 for October 16.

What does that mean for us? Low activity means a big, bright display is not the expectation. UAF’s supplied forecast says quiet displays may be visible overhead farther north, with possible low-horizon activity as far south as Talkeetna. Southcentral viewers will need both a clear patch of sky and a little luck.

Cloud check: Anchorage is forecast to become mostly cloudy tonight, Wasilla is forecast to be mostly cloudy, and Kenai’s clouds are expected to increase. Those conditions could limit viewing.

🌒 Moon Watch: Tonight’s waxing crescent means less moonlight competing with a faint aurora. Unfortunately, low aurora activity and increasing clouds could make sightings difficult in Southcentral Alaska.

💅 Memaw’s safety reminder: If you head out looking for the northern lights, choose a designated viewing area or a safe, legal pullout well away from moving traffic. The sky is worth watching. It’s not worth risking a collision.

🏆 National Sports Day: Memaw’s Wrestling Shoutout

Today is National Sports Day, and this Memaw has a special athlete to cheer for: my grandson Zachary, who’s involved in wrestling. The photo below is from his days at Wendler Middle School, but this year he wrestles for East High School.

🏆 That’s a winning moment! Zachary’s hard work on the wrestling mat pays off as the referee raises his arm in victory. This National Sports Day, Memaw’s cheering extra loud for her grandson and celebrating the grit, discipline, and determination it takes to earn that win. Way to go, Zachary! 💪🤼‍♂️

Wrestling has a remarkable history. Evidence of the sport dates back about 15,000 years, making it one of the oldest known competitive sports. Soccer may draw the world’s biggest audience today, but wrestling has been testing strength, balance, strategy and determination for thousands of years.

And for young athletes, the lessons go beyond winning. Practice builds skill. Competition teaches composure. Coaches help athletes learn from mistakes, and families cheering from the sidelines help make the hard work worthwhile.

So here’s to Zachary and all the young athletes putting in the hours, listening to their coaches, supporting their teammates and learning to get back up after a tough match. You don’t have to bring home a medal to make your family proud.

Happy National Sports Day! 🏆

💅 Memaw’s Parting Words

There you have it, road warriors. Friday is bringing us a little sunshine, some important construction reminders and a northern lights forecast that’s keeping its expectations modest.

Give the flaggers a break, give the car ahead of you some breathing room, and keep your eyes on the road instead of the sky until you’re safely parked. And if you’re heading out to cheer for your favorite athlete, remember that showing up is everything.

☕️Now go enjoy your Friday, hon. May your coffee be hot, your commute be uneventful, and your weekend arrive with all four tires still pointing in the right direction! Drive alive from dawn to night, sugar. 🚗💨
