☕️ Good morning, sunshine! Hold onto your coffee, your hat and possibly your dignity. Southcentral is getting a proper Friday soaking, with rain, gusty winds and some downright bossy weather rolling through the commute.
And because apparently Mother Nature wanted a theme today, it’s National Power Rangers Day. So channel your inner Ranger: teamwork, alertness and knowing when to say, “Nope, I’m not driving like a fool in this.”
The National Weather Service says rain and wind will dominate much of Friday. The Matanuska-Susitna Valley could pick up 0.5 to 1.5 inches of rain, while localized gusts of 40 to 50 mph are possible around west Anchorage and the Hillside.
🟢🟡🔴 Daily Verdict: Wet Roads, Wild Wind & a Morphin’ Commute
- Roads: Rain-soaked conditions expected across Southcentral; watch standing water and reduced visibility.

Matanuska-Susitna Valley – Significant Rain & Rising Water

When: Tonight through Saturday evening, with the heaviest rain tonight through Friday morning
Where it hits: Yentna and Skwentna river basins, western Talkeetna Mountains, Hatcher Pass and other Susitna Valley drainage areas
Why: NWS expects 0.5 to 1.5 inches of rain, with sharp rises possible on smaller streams and rivers and localized ponding in low-lying or poorly drained areas.
💅 Reality check: If your route takes you near a swollen creek, river or low-lying road, don’t play chicken with moving water. Turn around.
⚠️ Southcentral Watch (Anchorage Bowl & Hillside)
Anchorage, Hillside & Turnagain Arm – Gusty Gap Winds
Status: Wind hazard
When: Friday, especially as the system moves through
Where it hits: West Anchorage, Hillside, Turnagain Arm and Knik Valley
Why: NWS says gusts of 40 to 50 mph are possible in west Anchorage and the Hillside, with localized gusty southeast gap winds through Anchorage and Knik Valley.
💅 Reality check: Keep both hands on the wheel and give high-profile vehicles plenty of room. If your vehicle feels like it’s auditioning for flight school, slow down.

Official Anchorage forecast: Rain, then showers, with a forecast high near 59°F and Friday-night low around 48°F, according to Weather.gov. NWS also warns of strong southeast winds, including gusts that can reach 40 to 50 mph around west Anchorage and the Hillside.

Seward: Current conditions supplied from weather.gov show 52°F, rain and fog/mist, with visibility at 4 miles. Friday’s forecast calls for rain that could be heavy at times, a high near 57°F, and a 90% chance of precipitation.
💅 Memaw’s driving tip: Turnagain Arm plus strong winds deserves respect. If you’re towing, driving an RV or piloting something tall, this is not the day to prove your bravery.

Kenai Peninsula: Kenai is forecast to reach 58°F Friday with rain likely before 10 AM, then showers, followed by gradually clearing skies. Winds increase to 20 to 25 mph in the afternoon. Friday night drops to about 46°F, with southwest winds of 25 to 30 mph before easing.

NWS specifically identifies Knik Valley as an area where localized gusty southeast gap winds are expected.
💅 Memaw’s driving tip: Knik Goose Bay gets no gold star for drama today. Slow down, leave space and don’t assume that because the road is familiar, the weather is.
🌌 Aurora Watch: The Sky Wants to Morph
The Geophysical Institute’s Friday forecast calls for high aurora activity, with the supplied forecast reaching Kp 6during the day and Kp 4 at 10 PM. That’s a legitimately exciting geomagnetic setup.
But here’s the catch, Ranger: aurora requires darkness and reasonably clear skies. The GI specifically notes that clear skies are essential for seeing the display.
And tonight’s Southcentral forecast is mostly cloudy with showers in several areas.

If the clouds crack open after dark, look up. August 28 is right in the emerging aurora-viewing season, and tonight’s geomagnetic activity is worth keeping an eye on. The GI notes that its three-day forecast is updated daily and that Kp is an indicator of the size of the auroral oval.
And yes, there’s a Full Moon tonight. 🌕 That bright moon can wash out dim auroral features, although it can also enhance some visible colors during a bright display.
